Barometers

Atmospheric or barometric pressure is the weight of the Earth's atmosphere on the surface at a given location. Atmospheric pressure depends on the amount of air above the location where the measurement is taken, consequently the pressure drops as you go higher. It also changes as low and high pressure systems move across the Earth's surface and it is this fact that makes barometers one of the most important instruments used to predict future weather conditions. Meteorologists report air pressure in both inches of Mercury (inHg) and hectoPascals (hPa), also called millibars (mb).

Analog barometers, also known as aneroid barometers, use a small, flexible metal box called an aneroid cell. This evacuated aneroid capsule (cell) is prevented from collapsing by a strong spring. Small changes in external air pressure cause the cell to expand or contract. This expansion and contraction drives mechanical levers such that the tiny movements of the capsule are amplified and displayed on the face of the barometer. Digital barometers have a pressure sensor that's typically housed in the indoor display console. This solid state device uses a quartz membrane secured over an evacuated chamber, which flexes with changes in air pressure. These flexes are translated into voltage fluctuations that are converted to digital signals and sent to the microprocessor.

Analog Barometers

With its traditional styling, analog barometers use a reliable mechanical sensor to measure barometric pressure. Also called aneroid barometers, they are known for their ease of use, great accuracy, and proven dependability. Available in a wide range of affordable models.

Digital Barometers

Digital technology has made digital barometers extremely popular for a number of reasons. Their affordability, contemporary styling, relatively compact size, and additional features make digital barometers a great choice.

Stormglasses

Stormglasses are a mysterious weather predictor that have been used since 1750. The appearance of the crystals inside the sealed glass chamber indicates changes in the weather. Stormglasses make a beautiful and unique gift.
