Barometric pressure changes as low and high pressure systems move across the Earth's surface. Low pressure systems typically bring unsettled or stormy conditions while high pressure systems generally bring good weather. Keeping track of how the pressure is changing makes a barometer one of the most important instruments used to predict future weather conditions. Digital barometers found in home weather stations are usually housed in the indoor display console. This solid state device uses a quartz membrane secured over an evacuated chamber, which flexes with changes in air pressure. These flexes are translated into voltage fluctuations that are converted to digital signals and sent to the microprocessor. Digital technology has made digital barometers extremely popular for a number of reasons. Their affordability, contemporary styling, relatively compact size, and additional features make digital barometers a great choice.
