Cabled Weather Stations
Wired Home Weather Stations

Cabled weather stations use an electronic cable to transmit weather measurements from the remote sensors to the indoor console. Wired weather stations are generally less expensive than wireless home weather stations and offer the reliability of a direct connect to the remote sensors. Consequently, they are a bit more difficult to install and provide less flexibility than their wireless counterparts.

Of primary importance in the installation of cabled weather stations is the physical relationship between the remote sensors and indoor display console. The location of these components with regard to the length of available cable is a major consideration, especially professional weather station installation. Our Weather station set up guidelines should be reviewed to determine the requirements necessary for proper sensor placement. The inside console has to be accessible to the sensor cabling and yet should also be placed in a convenient location. If extension cables are available for your brand of weather station and you intend to use them, make sure you check the manual for the possibility of degraded system performance related to the extended length.

Since the remote weather sensors have to be connected to the indoor console, the cabling must be brought inside. The usual method is to drill a hole through the wall, though care should be taken not to damage any electrical wires hidden within (or yourself by electrical shock). Once the cable is inserted through the hole and connected to the console, a sealant needs to be applied at both ends for weatherproofing. The cabling should be routed neatly outside and secured to the wall and/or mast by plastic cable ties. Bury cables (preferably using conduit) going to remote yard locations to eliminate the tripping hazard and keep animals (or lawnmowers) from chewing through them.

Be aware of the potential danger from a lightning strike, a risk that's inherit with wired home weather stations versus wireless weather stations. Elevated remote sensors that are wired directly to the indoor console can transfer the energy of a strike right into your home! Lightning arrestors MUST be installed in cabled systems to minimize that risk and sensor mounting poles MUST be grounded properly. Failure to do so endangers not only your property but also your life.
