DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW

The RainWise WindLog is a compact, inexpensive wind data logger, designed to meet the needs of people considering the purchase of a wind turbine. While many people rely on wind charts to assist them with this purchase decision, the charts don’t provide detailed information for a particular area. WindLog allows you to do your own accurate wind study to optimize turbine placement at a specific location and its performance, once installed.

WindLog operates on three AA batteries. Battery life will depend on the environment and logging rates. Typical life should be around six months. Lithium batteries are recommended for cold environments. When connected to a computer the WindLog will use the USB port power to run. This further extends the life of the batteries.

The Mini-Aervane wind sensor is equipped with low friction race bearings. This reduces the threshold to approximately 1 mile per hour.  The wind direction sensor has a 16-point resolution. Logged direction readings are averaged readings.

WindSoft - Free Windows Software Package

The latest RainWise WindLog free Windows-based application, WindSoft, can be downloaded from RainWise.com as well as driver updates. The software uses a SQLite database to track and record wind information. While connected, WindSoft will update the database every minute. Downloaded data is integrated into the database. By combining both logged and real-time data, WindLog can be used both online and offline.

WindSoft can generate statistics, graphs and reports. It also can export CSV files for use with Microsoft Excel or any other application that supports CSV files.

WindLog ships with a 15 foot USB cable. This is the maximum standard USB cable length. A USB extender is available that will allow you to extend this cable to 100 feet using a CAT5e network cable, We carry the 50-foot extender cable.

A support mast is included with the WindLog. This mast can be used with any of the RainWise mounting systems, MONOMT or POD3. The mast may also be attached to a support structure using U-Bolts or lag screws.

Note: The 50-foot USB CAT5e network extender cable, as well as magnetic compasses to help you orient your anemometer to true north, are located under the "Accessories" tab shown above. For more information on set up, please visit the anemometer page on our WeatherShack education center.

5 stars Effective for monitoring wind energy; performs as described
12/18/2020
Our purpose was to evaluate the wind energy on our land with the intention of placing a wind turbine if there is sufficient wind energy. Shipped and arrived quickly. Packaged well to avoid damage. Easy to follow instructions and setup. Placed on a hilltop to do remote monitoring and then, later, downloaded collected wind data. Based on weather forecasts, the wind logger appears to be accurate in logging wind energy. Imports quickly and accurately to the included software. Software makes analysis straightforward. Export features provide the flexibility to use other tools to further analyze the data. The wind logger met all expectations.

I have only had the device a couple of weeks and only downloaded the data once. It appears to be easy to use and I was able to export to get some good graphs.

Easy setup and compact solution. Would give it 6 stars if it had mac software for data logger. But understandable. Not many loggers with mac software available...

5 stars Exactly the right device

We need to collect data to examine the feasibility of putting in wind turbines for off-grid power. Had to update my OS to update the driver, but once I did that, the USB driver on the disk updated and communication was as easy as plug & play. Easy to read for non-scientist and set it to measure every 15 minutes so we'll see if we get enough wind (and not too much)

2 stars Not so great

Should have spent the money on a wireless system. Too much of a hassle downloading data. Instructions and troubleshooting a little sparse. Have not yet called support, but may have to. Logger does not recognize my anemometer.

1 stars Defective Product
03/12/2012
WindLog came to me with the prop bearing dragging internaly. RainWise is shipping out a replacement part for ME to repair their product. I waited a week and contacted them again then they shipped the part. Poor quality product. Slow and careless customer service. For $300 RainWise should have sent out a return label for the defective one and sent out a new Windlog. I'll wait one more week and then return the product to the WeatherShack if I can't repair it.

5 stars Great product

Easy to install and set up, software is easy to use, I am very pleased. The only thing I would change would be the wind direction is displayed in degrees, it would be nice if the display was as the compass reads.

5 stars This product has, thus far, exceeded my expectations.
09/27/2011
I have started to monitor the wind velocity in my area for myself and others to determine whether there is sufficient wind energy to sustain the use of small wind turbines in selected areas. I contacted the manufacturer before purchasing the RainWise WindLog and was pleased to find out that this Maine company has been in business since 1974. The fact it was Made in the USA and the support was much to my liking. I then picked one of RainWise Distributors, the WeatherShack.Com as it has the best price and provided delivery within one week of online purchase. The ease of use, and quality software and hardware makes the set-up, installation and use just perfect for my application. Anyone considering the potential installation of a small wind turbine should consider this Wind Data Logger from RainWise a great instrument at a reasonable price to determine whether there is enough wind and if so the best location for a wind turbine.
